One time I wrote an annual evaluation for one of my GM’s. Brutal was what I needed but I found the ever faithful USN Evaluation Guide and found the wording in the “not so good” category that was supposed to appease the sailor being evaluated.
Apparently the GM had a copy of the same guide and was pretty pissed off. He came and read us the riot act and said that the eval was a Chief killer. One Master Chief and Two Senior Chiefs later he said that he was disappointed in our view of him. The Master Chief asked him to consider the language he used and the times he ridiculed everyone in the division and to consider how he would evaluate himself.
He quietly said something about maybe trying to be less abrasive. He did get better over the next couple of years but still had a nasty view of those that evaluated him as being Personable!
