In the spirit of the season, here is this year’s Christmas card from Broadside Cartoons. We wish you all Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and season’s greetings!
(Click on picture for OEF announcement) On October 7, 2001 America went to war. Still stinging from the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the thwarted attempt that was defeated by passengers of United Flight 93, the country was ready to take the battle to those who started it. It was not a time of celebration; it was a time of resolve. Fourteen years later, some of our troops are still there, in harm’s way. Operation Enduring Freedom (officially ended at the end of 2014) cost many good lives, and affected others permanently. But it cost the architects…
I had the privilege to attend a short seminar series this week, met a lot of nice people and learned a lot. And I couldn’t help but reminisce about military conferences I had attended. It isn’t that military conferences weren’t as nice, it is just that they…OK, they weren’t as nice. For one thing, everyone seemed to actually want to be at this conference. Not so when the Navy put one on. I do not ever remember wanting to attend a military seminar, and neither did anyone else. I actually took notes at this conference, and do not recall ever…
Does anything capture the American spirit more than the actions of three young American men who took down a terrorist before he had time to kill? Read this story to put what they did into perspective. (Click on the image.) (USA Today photo)
How’s this for a way to start your week? Meet at Jay Leno’s garage along with a few other wounded and injured veterans, hop on a brand new motorcycle donated by Indian Motorcycles, and begin a 1300 mile cruise to what is expected to be the biggest motorcycle rally in history – the 75th anniversary of Sturgis. To add to the experience, the warriors are getting some attention from the local communities (click on the logos to see the news stories): ABC Affiliate – Idaho ABC Affiliate – Los Angeles Three Wyakin Warriors will be riding with the group. After a year of preparation, a new bike and renewed confidence I entered the Dirty Kanza gravel bike race again this year. It is held in my hometown of Emporia, Kansas, and this year all four of the Bacon brothers came home to compete. Our wives, one of our cousins and one daughter also rode, but they were in the wimpy 20 miler. Amateurs. We were in the macho 100 mile trek, and we were ready. For everything but mud. Two years ago, Kansas was in a drought. Not this year. Record rainfall for the month of May fell over…
This is a great video about veterans, featuring Rob Riggle, one of my favorite actors/comedians. Oh. And did you know he is also a decorated Marine Corps Officer with combat experience?
Think back to January 21st of this year. Now imagine that every single day since then until today you have been shot at by thousands of rounds of mortars, artillery and small arms, and you cannot leave. That is what the survivors of one of the most intense and desperate battles of the Vietnam War experienced every day from late January through early April of 1968. The place was called Khe Sanh. One of them, Ken Rodgers, along with his wife Betty created a riveting documentary called “Bravo!, Common Men, Uncommon Valor”. Here is the trailer. The film is as…
