There is a scene in the excellent movie Taking Chance where Kevin Bacon, playing Marine LtCol Michael R. Strobl, studies casualty lists during the height of Operation Iraqi Freedom. That resonated with me because I did the same thing, as did many others during that time. Each name represented a shattered life and a heartbroken family back home. It was an emotionally draining experience. Over the years, the number of names decreased and today, very few people outside of the military and veteran communities give a second thought to the fact that thousands of young lives are still in harm’s…

It has been over three decades since we married. During that time, people have joined the military, served for thirty years, and have since retired. But I still see her as the twenty-something I met on a blind date thirty two years ago, having been set up by a buddy (still a buddy) who told me that I just HAD to meet a girl he knew. He was convinced we were made for each other. He was right. Through joy and sadness, laughter and anguish, she has always been there. Some people lead charmed lives. Others hit the lottery. With…
It is not just those in the military who serve. Watch this short video on Christmas eve. Thanks to Cliff, Army combat veteran, for forwarding.
What do cartoonists do on a Friday night in a town not your own? Why not draw on a perfect stranger’s wall? Thirteen famous cartoonists are in town to support the Wyakin Warrior Foundation by drawing for the public on Saturday and Sunday. But that is later. Tonight, having received little guidance, the cartoonists took it upon themselves to entertain themselves. This is what happened…
This is awesome.

As part of the festivities surrounding the Guardian Ball in a couple of weeks, there will be an Idaho premier of the movie Moose, written and produced by Chad Carpenter of Tundra fame. It will be shown just once – on Sunday afternoon (Dec 6) – at the beautiful Egyptian Theatre in downtown Boise. Tickets can be purchased at the Egyptian Theatre’s website. Chad is one of the funniest people I know, and the busiest. Yet, somehow he found the time to write and produce this movie. Proceeds go to the Wyakin Warrior Foundation to support wounded and injured veterans,…
Sometimes art needs to be looked at closely to really appreciate it. Remember the famous scene in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off when Cameron stares at the George Seurat’s painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”? (Editor’s note: I’m not an art geek. I googled it.) Well this poster art by Ray Alma of MAD Magazine fame needs to be looked at in detail to really appreciate the whole thing. In case you were wondering, the poster will be used to promote the fourth annual Wyakin Warrior Guardian Ball on December 5th in Boise to make it…
We live in a special place, safely tucked within the borders of this incredible country. One glance at the headlines, however, tells the story of a world in turmoil just outside the gates. Benghazi, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq…the list goes on and on. Brutality against mankind has become commonplace. The world has gone crazy. As we look around, it is only natural to yearn for easier times, to wish for things to return to normal. But that is the rub, isn’t it? I submit to you that violence, war and atrocities are not deviations in the human story. They are the…

(From 2014, but it is still good.) “On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress commissioned Samuel Nicholas to raise two Battalions of Marines. That very day, Nicholas set up shop in Tun Tavern. He appointed Robert Mullan, then the proprietor of the tavern, to the job of chief Marine Recruiter — serving, of course, from his place of business at Tun Tavern. Prospective recruits flocked to the tavern, lured by (1) cold beer and (2) the opportunity to serve in the new Corps of Marines.” (USMCpress.com) The Marine Corps has never looked back. Still the toughest. Still the service with…
