Sunday was the Navy’s 238th birthday. Instead of waxing poetic, I will defer to an excellent video put together by the Navy Media Service. It is about 5 minutes long, and worth the time. Happy Birthday to the service that gave me more than I ever gave her. As an extra, I was honored to speak to the Naval Operational Support Command in Spokane last weekend. Their theme was “Sharing Heritage.” Here is a poster I did for the event: (It’s a knock off of this famous poster): Happy birthday, Navy!

Halloween approaches, and it is the perfect time to tell a ghost story. We were camping in Yellowstone a few years ago (back when the federal government allowed that sort of thing) with several friends. We were in a campsite that had just been opened since the Grizzly mating season was finally over – which, by the way, is something you don’t want to get tangled up in. After a long day we sat by the campfire until people began hitting the sack. A couple of us walked to the toilets, which were about 50 yards down the road. It…

These two videos were sent to me by my buddy Cliff, an Army veteran and helo pilot. If you think you’re a pretty good pilot, your confidence might get knocked down a peg or two when you see these guys. First is Sean Tucker, arguably the best stunt pilot in the nation (also a strong supporter of veterans). I always thought that life was pretty fair, but then I met Paul Combs. Paul is a firefighter. But more than that, he is an incredible artist/cartoonist/caricaturist who is known throughout the universe as the artistic voice of the men and women who fight fires around the country. He is sort of the firefighting equivalent of Broadside, if Broadside were beautifully drawn and known in every fire district in the country. Oh, and if the artist were built like a linebacker, had a macho day job and sported a full head of hair (he added the last part). Paul has…

COL David Sutherland Hundreds of thousands of veterans are coming home. Tens of thousands of veteran service organizations want to help, but the effort is disjointed. Someone needs to do something. That someone is David Sutherland – Army veteran and one of the heroes of the surge in Iraq. He and Navy veteran Kim Mitchell run the Dixon Center and they need our help. Through Veterans Day, Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Community Services at Easter Seals is being featured in Newman’s Own Honoring Those Who Serve Challenge. They need 75 donations by the end of the week to…
