World War II officially ended on August 14, 1945. Although it was sixty-six years ago, it still seems like recent history because many WWII veterans are still with us. To them we owe our undying gratitude. Many young people will never know how desperate the situation was when the U.S. entered the war in 1941. The war had spread to the entire globe. We were suddenly thrust into a two-front war. In the east our allies were hanging on by their fingertips; in the west our fleet had been decimated by a powerful and brutal Japanese offensive. Yet despite these daunting challenges, those old men you see wearing WWII ballcaps fought back. And they won.
My father was one of them; I am sure many of your fathers and grandfathers were a part of it too. To the men and women who won the war, thank you for your sacrifice, and for the life you gave us as a result.
