I don’t know about you, but I’m getting just a little tired of hearing nothing. If the war in Iraq and Afghanistan were going badly, the news would be splattered all over the front page. Talking heads would soberly share the information and self-proclaimed experts would tell us how America has fouled it all up.
But I don’t hear much these days. The tired excuse that “bad news leads” is a cop out, quite frankly. Want some perspective? Watch this government-sponsored newsreel from WWII, and listen to the tone. Apparently good news sold well enough 63 years ago.
Guess what? There are a lot of good things happening in Iraq and Afghanistan.
U.S. Ambassador Cites Positive Changes in Iraq
Largest Public Works Substation Opens in Baghdad
Officials Identify Mosul al-Qaida Leader Killed in Recent Operation
Coalition Forces Kill One, Detain 11, Find Weapons in Iraq
Marines in Afghanistan Disrupt Taliban’s Freedom of Movement
Troops in Afghanistan Kill, Capture Enemy Fighters
I guess it’s a statement on the attitude of the American media that these stories were pulled from a government website…and odds are you’ll never see them on TV. Now, I’m no expert and I’m not a reporter. But my gut (and a lot of antecdotal information) tell me we’re winning. It sure would be nice to hear someone say it.
