As we near Memorial Day, it’s appropriate to remember those who have fallen in defense of liberty. It is also appropriate to thank our military members for the sacrifices they face every day, and our veterans for service already performed. Well done to you all, and thank you. Since 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War, Memorial Day has been observed as a day to honor those who have fallen in defense of our nation. As President Lincoln said, “…from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” (Gettysburg Address)
May 31st marks the end of Military Appreciation Month. It doesn’t mark the end of our appreciation of the military…because that, my friends, will never end.
